2010 PS3 Role-Playing Extravaganza – Part 1: Exclusives

I’m an RPG fan, I don’t pretend to hide it. I like the quirky JRPGs and the down and dirty Western incarnations.  I’ll be honest here, I purchased a PS3 not long after launch with the assumption that RPGs would be as prolific on that system as they were on its predecessor. I have been horribly disappointed for the last couple years, even to the point of using my PS3 for nothing more than a BluRay player. I’m far from a Sony fanboy, in fact, the Xbox 360 is my primary system and it is the system on which I will usually play multi-platform titles. If anything, I’m an RPG fanboy – I love RPGs in almost any form and on any system.  Naturally, when RPGs actually come to the PS3, I’m all over that.

But, since the PS3 has been lacking in this area in the past, let’s look toward the future. When we do that, we see that it is filled with hope and promise for RPG fans during the upcoming year, especially if you’re into the Eastern variety. There’s a good number of exclusive RPGs, which is a good sign and, again, something that has been severely lacking in the past. The first part of this series of articles is focused on those RPGs that you can get on no other console but on the PS3.  (A couple are or will be available for PC too, but I still consider them console exclusives, so I’ve listed them here.)

Note that I listed the game here if it either has a set NA release date in 2010, is projected for a release in NA in 2010 or has the possibility of releasing in 2010 in North America. In some cases I’ve given the Japanese release date as a point of reference – it could give us a reasonable idea when we would see the game on this side of the Pacific.

ar_tonelico_iii_boxartAr Tonelico III ~ 1/28/2010 (JP): The third in the series finally makes its transition to the PS3 and, unlike its predecessors, has full 3D rendered visuals. Oh, and you can order girls to undress for you. That’s why it’s at the top of this list. Seriously.

Atelier Rorona ~ 6/25/2009 (JP): Another Gust RPG series makes its way to the PS3. They’re really getting into this 3D thing, too, as it is also the first in the Atelier series to go fully 3D. It’s heavily based around collecting ingredients for use in its deep alchemy system and tells much of the story through a visual-novel-like approach. Another niche game, but it should find a nice market here in North America just like previous entries in the Atelier series.

DC Universe Online ~ 4/30/2010 (NA PC & PS3): An MMO set in the DC universe. The superhero MMO market is rather crowded, can the only licensed game of the sub-genre survive? It’s definitely something to check out if you have a superhero complex. [Note: Console exclusive to the PS3.]

free_realmsFree Realms ~ 4/28/2009 (NA PC): Free Realms is, for all intents and purposes, an MMO for the younger crowd. You can play it now on your PC, but it is also coming to the PS3 in mid-2010. Also of note is that it is free to play, but does support micro-transactions for additional in-game benefits and items. [Note: Console exclusive to the PS3.]

Last Rebellion ~ 1/28/2010 (JP): An game from one of my favorite publishers, Nippon Ichi. At first glance, it appears to be standard RPG fare with turn-based battles, but you’ll be able to target different body parts of your opponents to add an extra layer to game play.

Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll ~ 2010 (JP): The latest in KOEI’s Zill O’ll series (don’t worry, I haven’t heard of it either) should interest you because it’s actually one of the few action RPGs on this list. If a faster paced battle system is up your alley, perhaps you should keep your eye on this one.

white_knight_chronicles_naboxartWhite Knight Chronicles (International Edition) ~ 2/2/2010 (NA): Looking for a JRPG with co-op capabilities? This is your game. Sure, it has a single-player story, as well, but you can also team up with friends to go questing and take on tougher – and more lucrative – monsters.

3D Dot Game Heroes ~ 5/11/2010 (NA): Perhaps this is more of an action/platformer than an RPG, but I think it fits the RPG genre pretty well. It takes us back to the days of games like The Legend of Zelda and that time period’s 8-bit graphical style, but all rendered in glorious 3D.

I don’t claim this to be a comprehensive list, as there may be games missing, but it is rather impressive as it is, compared to previous years, eh? Feel free to make a note about any missing games in the comments, though! Which one of these, if any, are you looking forward to the most? In the next part of this article we’ll look at cross-platform titles, re-releases and ports that will be gracing Sony’s sleek black machine next year.

That’s a pretty complete list, the only game I can think of that you’re missing is Final Fantasy XIV.

The lack of Valkyria Chronicles on this list is EXTREMELY disturbing. If you haven’t played it I suggest you look into it. Demon’s Souls should be here too.

While it doesn’t qualify as a true RPG Yakuza 3 and I’m assuming 4 have RPG-like elements in them and are extremely story-oriented like most RPGs. Also I can’t remeber what it’s called but I think there’s going to be a sequel to Cross Edge coming out in Japan.

good article.but the current rpgs now out for it that are amazing titles would be valkryia chronicles and especially demons souls.you also should mention ffvs13 and ff14 thos are still exclusive to ps3(ff14 console exclusive.but on the list i look forward to DCU and WKC

@Gorvi: FFXIV I will talk about in another article because it isn’t necessarily console exclusive. It will be at first, but not necessarily forever. I decided to put that on my cross-platform list coming in the next day or two. (Although, to be honest, now that I think about it more, maybe I should have put it on this list? Needless to say, it isn’t forgotten and will be mentioned soon.)

@MostWanted: Name me some and I may do a wrap-up article listing ones I’ve missed. To my knowledge, the PS3 has no exclusive Western RPGs coming next year. I do have a couple that I am going to put on my cross-platform RPG list.

@MrAnonymous (3rd comment down): Valkyria Chronicles came out in 2008. While it is probably the best RPG on the PS3 at the moment, this article is about games we will likely see in 2010, nothing else.

@theunknown1: Yeah, I’m actually looking forward to Yakuza 3/4 too, especially since the original Japanese audio track will be the only one shipped with the game here. :D I hesitate to consider those RPGs, though. There are many games of many different genres that have RPG elements, but they aren’t necessarily RPGs.

@Star: SO4 is not exclusive, it will be mentioned on an upcoming article. Trust me, it’s there. Patience, my young grasshopper.

@asdcf: I have no heard any official confirmation of that. While they did say they would like to shorten the localization time for WKC2, given the fact it took over a year to get the first one localized, I have my doubts. I may mention it in a wrap-up article talking about “distant” future RPGs to look forward to. Same goes for FF Versus XIII.

Thank you all for your comments!

Last rebellion looks decent so does trinity souls and i have a feeling white knight might be like final fantasy was back in the day a big jrpg sony franchinse. Are there any western rpg exclusives coming to the ps3 because i feel that jrpgs are a dieng breed for this generation of gamers there too slow and methodical to grab the attention of the market. And if any of you guys need an rpg to play get valkyria chronicles or demons souls chronicles is very difficult the second time around and souls is the best frustration i have ever had

@aquaman839: Enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles a lot. Demon’s Souls was…interesting. I like it, and the challenge was nice, but maybe it was too dark for me, dare I say, too “Western”?

I enjoy Western RPGs, I do. Love Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fable II, etc. But, I enjoy JRPGs more. As for non-MMO Western RPGs on the PS3, there are none that are exclusive as far as I know – I’ll mention a couple in my next article about cross-platform RPGs coming to the PS3, but that’s about all I can find and they’re also showing up on the PC and/or Xbox 360. If you know of any, please point them out.

@David Macphail: No European release for Demon’s Souls in sight, I’m afraid. :(

This gen has a severe shortage of RPGs, prolly because devs find it more profitable to churn out games where you run around with (insert weapon here) shooting (insert alien/mutant/zombie here). It’s about time RPG fanboys had something decent to play

I’m more of a western RPG gamer, and unfortunately for me the PS3 is severely lucking in that field.
Microsoft invested in some great exclusive JRPGs (it actually seems the 360 currently has more JRPGs then the PS3 – as funny as it sounds), so why doesn’t Sony invest equally in any western RPG?
I guess both Demons Souls and White Knight are much more “westernized” then the usual JRPGs, but it’s still not “it”.

@Guy: Its unfortunate Sony can’t strike a nice balance in it’s available game library. From it’s release until now JRPG fans have wondered the same thing about their favorite genre. Now that we’re actually getting more than one quality JRPG a year, it seems they’re starting to drop the ball in other areas. Microsoft actually seems to be keeping a better balance than Sony – there are a lot of Western RPGs that seem to have console exclusivity on the Xbox 360, like Risen and Divinity II, for example. Plus they have a decent library of JRPGs.
