MW2 DLC is Now an Expansion?! What Happened To 2 Map Packs?
Joel Taveras | Jan 08, 2010 | Comments 28
Wow, how quickly do we forget? I know as gamers we normally have pretty short attention spans because we all live in the now, but seriously how hasn’t anyone picked up on this yet? I am the only one who can recall back to MSoft’s E309 Keynote, which left 360 fanboys reaching for the sky in victory and Sony fan’s groaning in the corner. This was all following the announcements of 2 timed exclusive map packs (not an exclusive timed expansion) headed to the 360 first. Don’t take my word for it just look around online, if you seek you shall find what I say to be true. Just check out the quote below!
“Developer Infinity Ward today took the stage at Microsoft’s E309 Media Briefing, announcing that the Xbox 360 will receive two downloadable map packs before any other platforms”
Well, what’s changed then since then you ask? Oh not that much, just that Sony has Slimmed down the size of PS3. They have also provided the much needed price break that both the public as well as publishers were calling for; bringing the price of the system down to the impulse buy price of $299. And not to mention they’ve managed to move 3.8 Million units in a month. They have 38 million registered PSN users, compared to Xbox Live’s 20 million subscribers (half of which are gold members).
While I’m sure those who consider themselves as part of the 360 camp are now quickly reaching for the latest NPD results, to check the difference in MW2 sales. One thing that those people need to take into account that both Amazon and Walmart are not accounted for on that survey. That 4-1 sales ratio in favor to MS, may in reality not be as big of a difference. Now this is all going on theory, but has Activision actually gone as far as changing the details of the deal, as the climate in the console war seems to be shifting? Microsoft may still have secured the timed exclusive, but why is it now refereed to as an expansion when it was “2 map packs” less then a year ago? This may be a bit of a reach, but last we all heard it was all map pack this and map pack that. Now we have the word expansion, and that sounds nothing like map pack!
I don’t think that’s too much of a reach, but I want to hear what you the reader thinks! Let us know in the comments section!

DLC is DLC. Infinity Ward heard consumer complaints about the single player campaign being too short, so they decided to give the fans what they want. And along the same reasoning as GTA IV, PS3 people will have to wait because sony refuses to pay for exclusive DLC, and Microsoft has taken advantage of this. It has nothing to do with fan bases or PSN vs Xbox Live subscribers. I, for one, am relieved that they are going to add to the single player experience as, to me, it can provide scenarios that multiplayer does not, and it shows more creativity that is lost on most multiplayer based games.
I dont know if your complaining about the idea of an expansion, the fact its not coming to PS3 on time with xbox 360, or what, but i think its rare to hear a gamer say that he/she is upset that a developer is giving them more of what they already love just because they cant have it as soon as their other friends. Its called capitalism, and its one of the few things microsoft has under control. All this coming from an Apple user no less.
I don’t think the fact that Sony won’t pay for exclusive DLC is what matters. What matters is that Activision, probably the most successful video game publisher right now, decided to the make the content exclusive. That is absurd to me, given how big their fan bases on both consoles are. It’s a betrayal to the PSN users. This isn’t about capitalism when it comes to the hardcore gamers. Maybe to you it is. But numbers don’t mean anything. XBox users would be using the same argument I am if the content were exclusive to the PSN. So overall, I’d have to say the verdict is that it’s absolute B.S. for Activision to have made the DLC exclusive. And if Microsoft simply offered to pay them for exclusivity rather than Activision offer it for that, then shame on Activision for not refusing.
I reckon MW2 gamers don’t really care that much about the single game a much as the multi-player side. And although M$ do have a timed exclusive with MW2 expansion, PS3 owners have got a wealth of exclusives coming their way in 2010 and that’ll cost the wallet. One less DLC is good news for PS3 owners this year.
Its not so much Activisions fault. They were offered a deal to develop a timed exclusive and they’re a business, so of course they would accept it. If it turned out good, it would only garner more demand for it once it hit the playstation network. Look at GTA 3, Vice City, or San Andreas. Sonys standing deal with Rockstar kept these games exclusives (until they became simply timed exclusives). This not only made the sales for the GTAs on xbox skyrocket, but garnered a demand by teasing the lacking console. Then, microsoft offered rockstar a deal when their Sony exclusive contract was up and since their in the business to make money, along with produce great games, they took it. No one likes to see their console exclusives go multiplatform, but it happens and the developers now use different methods to garner interest in their games via semi-exclusive DLC.
Personally, im glad that the new metal gear is multiplatform because i dont have to buy a ps3 just to play a game series i love, but if hideo kojima said that all DLC would be available for ps3 only or release a year later on xbox, then thats just the way it is.
It is inherent that there will be some form of competition to sway customers in war between two similarly matched consoles. This generation is no exception and it appears that, along with first party games, 3rd party games fall in the middle of the tug of war that is competition (and thats not going anywhere).
Moan Moan Moan… you little sony maggots
OK first, map pack, expansion, its the same difference. Second, why are you bringing in all this fanboy shit for? All this about “according to sales figures, the PS3 has sold 3.8 million, so ha” and “MW2 has sold more on 360, but dont trust sales figures”. Not only are you a massive hypocrite, but youre ultimately trying to find an answer for a question that no one asked.
I personally do not care about timed delays, m$ or Sony. I do care that i.w. Is ripping us off. They will unlock what’s already on the disc then throw a few maps for more money. Pawns.
First off we can all agree that MW2 has sold more on the Xbox 360 as did the first Modern Warfare game and every other Call of Duty game. Also Infinity Ward has already said before that Xbox Live is bigger and brighter for them for the amount of players and those who will buy DLC. So to me this article is a little strange seeing as how Batman on the PS3 had extra content so why is this a big deal?
Obviously Sony and MS are now using the online services to market their platforms and one way of doing this is to get exclusive content or timed exclusive deals. Business is business and the fact that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are so competitive to one another these business tactics are bound to continue.
Just like the above person said about Rockstar. They are now doing Agent only on the PS3. So obviously they are still doing backroom deals that are carrying over from the PS2 era. The PS2 had timed exclusions with the GTA games so why is this anything to write an article about?
Maybe they will finish the game with this “expansion” since call of duty Vietnam was just announced they might as well finish the story of MF2.
From what i am hearing they my be adding more Special Ops missions so that is why they are calling it an exspanion
Add Me On PSN: BucksBrewersPack
Nice spin! 38 million PSN users with less than 38 million PS3’s, how does that work? Well, I have 5 PSN accounts. My friend has 5 PSN accounts. His friend has 5 PSN accounts.
No matter how hard this pro-Sony site spins it, we all know that they do no have 38 million people actively using the Playstation Network.
On top of that, almost twice as many copes of Modern Warfare 2 were sold on the 360.
This article above is poorly written and is the ramblings of a butthurt fanboy.
Do the math. 38 million PSN users and 32 millions PS3’s sold. Doesnt make much sense does it? Xbox users pay for their accounts, therefor it isnt necessary to make multiple accounts like PSN users do. Most people have a Japan, an UK, and an US account on their system.
look, they promised 2 map packs wich there going to STILL give us!!! There just thinking of an expansion to go along. So dont be posting fake stuff and making award winning infinityward look bad cause i hate to break it to you but its making you look bad.
Why do the PS3 controllers suck. I feel like im going to break them everytime I play a game and why are the recharging cords so short? wtf? o wrong subject but MW2 seems like a 360 game anyway (sales, marketing, gameplay) so this seems about right. and jimbo, you dont make sense
I don’t see any quotes from the dev or publisher that this will in fact be an expansion.
PSN has lots of registered users because creating new accounts is free. Pretty much everybody on my friends list had multiple accounts to access each countries version of the store.
Whoever wrote this article is a bias psn fanboy that is upset that we get the dlc sooner.
Whether you like it or not microsoft controls the gaming market now and always will so Sony should go back to doing what they do best.
Making Mediocre phones and T.V’s and see how far that can get them.
San andreas il think you’ll find wasn’t exclusive it came out on xbox same time as ps2 and anyway it’s Sony showing they don’t care about there gamers that they can’t be bother spending money to get you dlc that is probobly brillian at the same time as ms who actually invest some good money into their people. PS3 sucks. Xbox rulez
Also what do Sony make absolutly terrible phones TVs and of course the piece of shit they call a ps3. Microsoft make the best computer software in the world, they make android os for mobiles which is one of the best in the world, XBOX 360!!! and btw before you think I’m an xbox dan boy in posting this from my iPod touch
Hey all you fucktards…. this guy isnt a ps3 fanboy.. hes simply telling the facts. Yes i have 3 account on the psn but that doesnt mean EVERYBODY does. there are propably a near equivelant amount of users between the two systems, so all of you numbskulls rambling on about how this guy is biased, i believe his article is not. The timing of the expansion packs does not really bother me, however i would love to see whatever comes our way as soon as possible. I also like how a few of the 360 fanboys are saying “im posting this from apple”…. we’re talking consoles here, noone really cares that u have an 8Gb Ipod touch. so to sum up my thoughts on the real message of this article(NOT that ps3 is better or Xbox 360 is better) i beliueve that the timing of the expansions packs does not really concern most.
Business is business.
How I see it is even when Xbox gets DLC first. Its still going to have some glitches. Face it MW2 has alot of glitches and the map pack is bound to have some. It will act as a beta to the Ps3/Pc. They will probably get a better polished map pack. Thats just my theory. Be glad PS3 lucky bastards
i believe its now called an expansion rather than a map pack because it features more than just maps – new modes, guns, camo’s and attachments have been rumored.
MW2- everyone can agree its a great game so great in fact people are willing to argue about who’s getting ripped off because of exclusive DLC. just be glad you even have the game on your platform in the first place. Halo for instance- another great game. imagine how many millions of people made the comment “i wish they had that game for the Playstation” well too bad exclusive to Xbox. now you have this amazing game that is multiplatform and your complaining about who gets DLC first. IW needs to make every other game and DLC all exclusive to the Xbox, just so these PS3 pansys shut up and get a real system. how many millions of people do you think is going to buy a 360 when reach comes out. maybe then when everyone obviously sees what games are better on which system, people will stop arguing and PS will be taken out of gaming for good.
No PS3 Fags were harmed in the making of this comment-
XBOX 360- yea its that good…
10 Million gold? thats hilarious if you honestly think xbox has only 10 million members. mw2 alone has 9.5million players and thats only one game. get your facts right. stop complaining, either just wait for the maps or stop complaining and buy a 360
This is segregation in gaming, why do we have to wait to get a map pack/expansion!? Any ways someone said new camos, how? There’s pretty much every main camo available, maybe an adaptive ghillie suit? i would like new guns too, I smell XM8. Microsoft is probably paying Sony. BTW I have a sony Bravia and it’s awesome, I bet Microsoft can’t make 1080p TV’s, fully compatible with PS3~
Man, what’s with all the haters!? Like that kryptnte guy? Can you say 360 fagboy? Who really cares that it’s a timed exclusive? Like OMG I CANT GET THE DLC FOR A MONTH?!?!?! I GOTTA GO GET AN XBOX!!! OH WAIT! no I don’t… And can’t you people do the math. 32 million PS3’s, 38 million accounts. It doesn’t add up right? Well there a clearly about 32 million different people with accounts because the service is free, duh! Lol Kryptnite – “go get a real system”. Yeah I did, it’s called a PS3. it has Blu-Ray, free online services, 1080p resolution, oh but it the 360 does have something that the PS3 doesn’t – it’s called RROD.
Don’t get me wrong – XBox 360’s are great, but PS3’s are equally great, if not the superior system.
I have a PS3. I really can’t see why anyone with a PS3 is complaining about getting the DLC later. Did they forget PS3’s get online for free and Xbox 360 pay for it? You get what you pay for. But also, all the xbox 360 humpers need to shut up, both systems play games, why does it offend you so much that someone else uses a different system than you? Have fun paying for online, not being able to make your clan tag FUCK (we all have the urge) and having redrings.
