EA Claims Madden 11 is the Best-Selling Game of August

madden11art-832x1024

While the NPD numbers are yet to be revealed, Madden 11 is apparently the best selling video game title for the month of August. Not a group to respond modestly to success, EA went on to release the following statement about the game:

“Madden NFL 11 is the number one selling game in August, and the game has created enormous enthusiasm in the online community, each day on consoles, fans are playing as many games online as the equivalent of 750 full NFL seasons.”

EA also claims that sales of Madden are up 5% over last year across all consoles, that more than 2 million games of Madden are played each day, and that more than 20% of players have at least tried the Online Team Play game mode. Remember what I said about modesty?

It doesn’t come as much of a shock that Madden 11 would claim the top spot for sales in August. The series has consistently been a best seller on consoles. The official NPD numbers will be in later this month, just in case you wanted to know just how much of EA’s gloating is factual.

Scooby-Doo! and the Spooky Swamp Website Launch (Sort Of)

Scooby-Doo

Are kids still into Scooby-Doo!? That’d be awesome if they were, because the upcoming Scooby-Doo! and the Spooky Swamp for Wii, DS and PlayStation 2 (yes, PS2) has launched its official website. What can you find at this website? Well, tons of Scooby-Doo! stuff of course!

The website features wallpapers, buddy icons and screensavers, along with a soon to be unveiled mini-game. This can all be found by going to www.scoobydoovideogames.com

Oh wait…the website isn’t working. How unfortunate. As of right now the website is not functional. These people launch a website, announce it to the world, but all we get is a dead link. Something about this smells real fishy. We need Scooby-Doo! and the gang to solve this mystery!

Lost Planet 2 Dated For PC

LostPlanet2 logo-1024x546

Earlier this year, Capcom’s highly anticipated Lost Planet 2 released to mixed reception. It launched on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 whilst the PC version of the game was noticeably absent. PC fans needn’t worry though, as similar to the first Lost Planet, they’ve taken extra time to port the title over.

The sequel will release on October 12th for the PC. While the date is a staggering five months after the game’s console release, its better late than never. Maybe there will be some sort of special content available; perhaps we’ll see the return of the revolutionary cross platform play between the PC and the Xbox 360. Stay posted for more info as it becomes available.

European BlazBlue Fans Get Ultra Limited Edition of Continuum Shift

blazbluefanedition

European BlazBlue players will get their hands on the newly released sequel sometime in October. This is actually very good news to them since the prequel, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, came out relatively recently in April of this year. A bit shocking considering that Calamity Trigger came out in June of last year in North America.

In any event, the wait will definitely be worth it when Europe gets a very special version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. There will be a standard and limited version of the title, in addition to this new version. The limited edition includes highly stylized cards that detail the attacks and systems of specific characters, and a very pretty ninety-six page art book. Check out the rest of the details after the break.

An Unlikely Comparison – Mass Effect and Persona 3

masseffect femaleshepherd

As I was playing through Persona 3 Portable recently, something quite interesting dawned on me. I alluded to this in my review, but I’d like to discuss it in more detail and perhaps get a good discussion going around the subject. What I realized was that, in everything that really matters, Persona 3 isn’t so different from Mass Effect. Mass Effect, especially the original, belongs to a sub-genre of RPGs that gamers typically consider to be about as different from Japanese RPGs as you can get, so why am I going and comparing two completely different games within two completely different sub-genres? Think about it a moment, though. Are they really that different in the areas that really matter?

Why do I even bring this up? It is mostly just my convoluted mind playing tricks on me, to be honest. I came up with a crazy thought and, the more I thought about it, the more I realized it wasn’t too far from the truth. I think the disparity between fans of JRPGs and fans of WRPGs calls for a wake-up call. Every time I see a thread on some random Internet forum about one or the other, there are always haters that place their preferred RPG style up on a pedestal like no one can touch it. But, the truth of the matter is, these sub-genres may not be as different from each other as you think, and comparing these two very different yet oh-so-similar games seemed like the right idea to help make people aware of this.

So, open your mind a bit (I know, it’s difficult) and follow me on a journey as I take a look at various aspects of these games. You may be surprised just how similar they are.

Great Game Finds – The Gems I’ve Been Looking For

gamefinds talesofsymphonia

I’ve never considered myself a game collector, per se. The only titles I’m real interested in keeping around or acquiring are JRPGs, and a lot of that has to do with the rare nature of many of the niche titles. There’s one game in particular I’ve been looking for for years, ever since I borrowed it from my sister and played it all those years ago – Tales of Symphonia. Yep, the GameCube title, which is considered one of the best of the Tales franchise, has been eluding me for years.

Today, thanks to GameStop’s “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” promotion going on this week, I finally found it.

Real Life Lessons from Persona 3

p3p 02

Playing through Persona 3 for the second time gives me a chance to pick up on many things that I may have missed the first time through. I was so enamored with the fact that this was a great RPG for the PS2 in the midst of the high-def generation of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that concentrating more on the character building and relationship aspects of the game kind of took a back seat. That’s saying a lot coming from me, Mr. Character Development is Everything, right?

As I’m making my way through Persona 3 Portable for review, I realized something – there are some pretty sizable messages written into the dialog, both of the main story and the side stories, or Social Links. While Western games tend to lean on blood, gore and sex to express their “maturity”, I’m of the opinion that the subject matter and character interactions are what creates a truly mature experience.
