A Proposition for Sony: Worldwide PlayStation Store

PSN

One of the most appreciated aspects of Sony’s consoles this generation – and this applies to both the PS3 and the PSP – is that, when it comes to games, they are “region free”. What does this mean? For those of you who don’t know, various forms of media are typically locked into one region, and can only be played on devices that originate in that region. If you look on the front and/or back of any DVD or BluRay you purchase in North America, you’ll typically see a “Region 1” somewhere on it. This means that it can only be played in DVD or BluRay players native to “Region 1”, which is basically all of North America.

Portable White Knight Chronicles Officially Announced

whiteknightchronicles2 15-1024x576

In this week’s Famitsu, something that Sony has been hinting around finally was announced – White Knight Chronicles: Episode.Portable – Dogma Wars. This is a version of the title for the PlayStation Portable that is aiming for a release in Japan sometime in 2011. I’m tired of making jokes about how long the first White Knight Chronicles took to localize, so I’ll just tell everyone to not hold your breath for this to come stateside.

This new portable iteration features the White Knight once again, except this time around it’s the enemy. So, something must have taken place in the 10,000 years since Leonard’s adventures in the first two PS3 outings. Not a whole lot is known about this title yet, but it seems to continue the tradition of RPGs that start on a console making their way to a handheld platform, much like Valkyria Chronicles and Kingdom Hearts. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on this one.

King of Fighters Sky Stage Rated for Xbox 360

king-of-fighers-sky-stage-image

King of Fighters is a fighting game series that is rather popular in its place of birth, Japan. Also rather popular in Japan are arcade shooters, labeled in the sub-genre as “Bullet Hell”. Well, it was only natural that a King of Fighters arcade shooter be created.

Apparently, the ESRB has evaluated an Xbox Live version of KOF Sky Stage, meaning that it will most likely be making its way to North America soon. It should be noted that KOF Sky Stage was released in Japan as a part of a larger game for the PSP, but I doubt anyone will have hard feelings about getting less KOF arcade shooter.

Ys Seven Review

ysseven box

I went into Ys Seven with few expectations, and even less knowledge of the entire franchise than I wanted. Needless to say, it was an RPG and I’m all for trying new RPGs. This one was no different. The Ys franchise has been around for a long time and, unlike other RPG franchises, this one sticks mostly with the same characters, just different stories in each title. Here we have the series’ main character, Adol, and his friend Dogi (is that pronounced like “doggie”?) arriving on a new land via boat. What is your goal? To search for treasures, of course.

Not being a series regular, so to speak, I didn’t quite know what was going on, as the dialog didn’t seem too cognizant that some players may not have played previous games. While the story is unique to this title, I just didn’t “get” all the character interactions between Adol and Dogi because I hadn’t played previous titles in the series. But, all that really isn’t needed to enjoy this game.

Los Angeles Taping of God of War Documentary Invites Fans to Join In

god-of-war-32

If you’re lucky enough to not be busy on Wednesday, and you happen to live in Los Angeles, then Sony might have something for you to do. Sony is gathering all of the directors from the God of War series and is featuring them in a documentary extra for Ghosts of Sparda for the preorder bundle, and with this gathering he would like to invite the public to watch. But yes, there is sort of a catch.

The gathering place is the El Portal theater in North Hollywood, and in order be able to watch the taping, you must be one of 150 people. It’s basically a first come, first serve basis. You also must be at least eighteen years old, or accompanied by a guardian to even be able to enter.

If you’re not sure who these directors are, here’s their names: David Jaffe, Cory Barlog, Stig Asmussen, Ru Weerasuiya and Dana Janve.

All of the 150 people who attend will also receive gifts, and will have the chance to earn prizes as well.

If you want, though it’s not mandatory, you can RSVP on the Facebook page, as well as get directions to the venue.

Good luck to those interested in going!

Tron: Evolution Limited Edition Details

tron-collectors-edition-1024x492

There is plenty of type surrounding the upcoming action/adventure title Tron: Evolution. It’s related to a movie, also called Tron, from 1982 and is being published by Disney Interactive, who are purveyed by Disney, who created the film. Did I mention there will also be Tron film released this year?

Whether or not you’ve followed the franchise since 1982, you will most definitely be interested in the upcoming game when you see its classy Collector’s Edition. It includes a model of the light cycle, which is the iconic vehicle that only moved in directly parallel or horizontal lines.

Alongside this stylish model (which has glowing light, by the way), you’ll also get a display case for the model and premium casing for the game. At a luxurious $129.99, you’d expect a few more trinkets, but fans of Tron have no reason to pass this up. Unless of course, they can’t afford it. Tron: Evolution will release November 1st for the PC, PSP, PS3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Will Not be Released for PSP Go

Kingdom Hearts BBS-300x195

Square Enix disappointed some (but likely not that many) when their PR firm recently reported to IGN that Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, the highly anticipated next game in the Kingdom Hearts series, is currently only set to be released via UMD only. Despite rumors to the contrary, Square Enix currently has no plans to release Birth By Sleep digitally on the PlayStation Network – which is bad news for the ten people out there that actually bought a PSP Go.

This news is especially astonishing because not only is Birth By Sleep almost definitely going to be a top seller, nearly every game released for the PSP in the past year has also had a subsequent PSN release for those who own the PSP Go, even smaller titles. Could this mean Sony is accepting that the PSP Go was not a successful venture?

Just one more reason I’m glad I decided not to upgrade from my PSP 3000.

Final Fantasy XIII Versus Confirmed to Appear at TGS 2010

Final Fantasy Versus XIII PS3 Screen

We know that yesterday’s post about Final Fantasy XIII Versus and its release date left many fans of the series totally and completely bummed. Oddly, I ended the post saying “Let’s hope the game appears at the Tokyo Game Show next month.”

Well imagine my expression when I learned that the highly anticipated exclusive would indeed be appearing at Japan’s biggest gaming event!! We discovered viaSiliconera that Tetsuya Nomura confirmed the game’s showing by way of his Twitter account.

Apparently, both Final Fantasy XIII Versus and Final Fantasy XIII Agito will be shown together in one single, short promotional video. Other games confirmed to appear include Kingdom Hearts: Re:coded and Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday. We’ll have more on all these titles when they’re shown next month at the Tokyo Game Show.
