New, Free Mass Effect 2 DLC Coming Up

Bioware announced today that they’ll be pushing some exciting new DLC to those who own Mass Effect 2 with the Cerberus Network (which is free with a new copy of the game).  At the end of March the “Firewalker” DLC will arrive, packed with five new missions that make use of a new vehicle called the Hammerhead.  It’s an assault vehicle that flies above the ground and shoots huge rockets, what’s not to like?  This is part of the ongoing slew of both free and paid additional content they promised for Mass Effect 2 and I definitely look forward to getting behind the controls of this new vehicle.  Check after the jump for some screens that were released along with the other details.

Mass Effect 2 Unplayable on Some SDTVs

BioWare’s Mass Effect 2 on Xbox 360 unfortunately, as many of its fans have found out the hard way, is unplayable on some standard definition TVs.  Normally one would expect that High Definition games are made with a different text size in SD, as that is usually the case.  This is because SD is not capable of anything near the resolution of HD so if the font is too small, you are just looking at tiny undecipherable blurs.

ME_Unreadable

This is the case for many of the people who bought Mass Effect 2.  So far, BioWare has expressed their remorse explaining this issue came to be from a design decision during development.  While they have first stated they had no plans at this time to update the game in relation to this issue, and played it down a lot, their community would not take no for an answer.  Until BioWare said no.  They responded on their message boards putting the issue to rest once and for all by stating that they are “unable” to resolve this issue through a title update.  That in itself seems a bit like bull droppings.  Is it because you can’t or you don’t feel like it?

Either way, it is obvious that people out there experiencing this problem would enjoy the game a lot more in HD, but that may not be an option for everyone.  Hopefully they will do something about this soon and stop sitting on their hands.  If you are one of those people out there dealing with this, we feel your pain.

Mass Effect 2 Gets Some Free Armor

If you’re still into Mass Effect 2 and are just itching to give your Shepherd another look, you’re in for a treat tomorrow.  Bioware announced today that they’ll be releasing a new free downloadable armor set and weapon through the Cerberus Network.  This will be the first piece of DLC they have released for the game since launch day. Let’s hope that the future holds more for the Cerberus Network than just a piece of armor here and a weapon there, though. Beefier new missions or clusters to explore would be preferable, and I would accept new outfits for the party members, as well. *hint, hint*

For those curious, here is some information about the new pieces of gear:

Cerberus Assault Armor: This armor is designed for shock troops to be able to turn the tide of battle against forces that would decimate normal soldiers (wait, doesn’t Shepherd do this already?).

  • Increases heavy weapon ammo capacity by 10%.
  • Increases shields by 10%.
  • Increases health by 10%.

M-22a Eviscerator Shotgun: A longer-range shotgun with armor-piercing loads.  The design of this weapon seems to violate several intergalactic treaties, so it isn’t distributed to your typical soldier.

Let’s just hope the helmet is removed during cut scenes in the game that would typically remove a helmet.  I don’t want to lose immersion because of a crazy set of armor!  Needless to say, this will be available starting today for both the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game.  For more information on the new gear, check out the official site.

Mass Effect 2 Review

Bioware has once more seen fit to allow us to enter the awe-inspiring, dangerous, provocative universe of Mass Effect – and what a journey it is. From the sleek, clean lines of the previous game’s Citadel, to the cool mysteriousness of the Asari colony world Illium, and on to the rough and tumble debauchery of Omega, we’re taken on a wild and crazy ride that surpasses the original in almost every way imaginable. We meet interesting characters with greater depth than the likes of Master Chief or Cloud Strife and are allowed to shape the way the universe perceives us and the outcome of many a situation by the way we act and the decisions we face more than any other game that has come before.

New Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening Video

If you like all the blood and gore of Dragon Age: Origins, you’ll be right at home watching this video, another teaser for the upcoming expansion to the hit RPG.  The only words uttered in this short video are “I will be leaving you to the children”, whatever that means.  I assume by “children”, it’s referring to whatever those things are that are hatching.  Let’s just say, someone must have beat those things with an ugly stick, because I sure wouldn’t want to run into them in a dark alley somewhere.

Awakening will be coming to all three platforms on which Dragon Age: Origins is available, on March 16, 2010.  Nice of Bioware to keep our appetite under control with these little teasers, eh?

New Trailer for Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening

Coming up in March, Electronic Arts and Bioware will be releasing the first expansion – yes, full expansion, not just DLC – for Dragon Age: Origins, title Awakening.  The trailer below is called “Queen of the Black Marsh” and looks pretty epic, although it is a tad on the short side.  Doesn’t “Black Marsh” sound like something out of The Lord of the Rings?  Come to think of it, many things in Dragon Age remind me of that Tolkien epic.  Anyway, back to the trailer!

FREE Mass Effect: Redemption Comic on iPhone

If you act soon enough, that is.  Here’s the dealio.  The four-part comic series Mass Effect: Redemption, is coming to the iPhone App Store for $0.99 a pop starting February 3 (that’s Wednesday).  To commemorate the release of this comic that can be read and enjoyed on the iPhone and iPod Touch, Dark Horse and EA are giving away part one for free ON FEBRUARY 3 ONLY.  A day later and you’ll have to pass a buck for it.  If you don’t plan on getting it in physical form and are a Mass Effect lore junkie (and own one of the devices above), this is definitely an option.

Mass Effect 2 Sells Over Two Million Copies

Now, the press release says that it sold two million copies in the first week, but the first week won’t be over until Monday night.  So, I’m going to hop on the assumption train and say that the game sold over two million copies.  Why EA jumped the gun on this press release is anyone’s guess.  I can see if it sold this many copies in 24 hours…but five days?  Why send it out after five days and nail down the entire week’s sales to two million?  Perhaps by Tuesday morning it will have moved another million units?  Wouldn’t that sound more impressive?

Needless to say, this sci-fi action shooter (notice I left “RPG” out of that description?) is a hell of a lot of fun and has an epic story, amazing writing, art direction and dialog, it’s no surprise that it flew off the shelves faster than it takes Commander Shepherd to put a bullet in your ass if you piss her off.  Just like with Dragon Age: Origins, I am definitely pleased to give Bioware (and, begrudgingly, EA) a collective pat on the back for dishing out such an amazing piece of art.  Now, I must get back to scanning for minerals.  Look for my review in the coming weeks.

Put Your Diapers On: Mass Effect 2 Launch Trailer

To save your pants and your seat, you should strap on some adult diapers before you watch this trailer, because you will likely defecate all over yourself.  That’s how awesome this trailer for Bioware’s Mass Effect 2 looks.  As if we weren’t hyped up enough already for the impending release of this sci-fi epic, this trailer pushes the hype machine over the top.  You get a quick shot at just about every character Shepherd teams up with, as well as a make-out session, some firefights and general heroic-looking shots of the characters who will likely contribute to humanity’s salvation.  The game drops next week, January 26, exclusively for the Xbox 360.
