Xbox Live’s Borderlands Deal
Anybody who has yet to play Borderlands or those of you who were to cheap to see what else the wasteland had to offer, might be interested in Xbox Live’s Deal of the Week. This week, for Xbox Live Gold members only, all of the Borderlands expansions are fifty percent off. This includes Secret Armory, The Underdome and Zombie Island. That puts these expansions at a very tempting four hundred Microsoft points each or just twelve hundred Microsoft points for all three. Sound good to you? Well if it does hop on to Xbox Live and download them now or if you are looking for more information on the games themselves just click here.
Views: 103New Release Rundown ~ Week of 4/4/2010
Well now, it looks like a good week to save yourself some cash, or take your girlfriend out for a nice dinner, because there is very little in the way of new games. I guess we have to have a down week every once in a while, right? After the mad rush of all the big titles last month, now we’re lacking a bit in just about anything. The most notable releases are add-on packs or DLC. We have the Borderlands: Double Game Add-On Pack, which groups the two DLC packs together in one snazzy retail bundle for those without a viable internet connection. Also, if you’re still infatuated with Mass Effect 2, a nice piece of paid DLC comes our way in the form of the Kasumi’s Stolen Memories content, which you’ll be able to download to your heart’s content tomorrow. Other than that, someone definitely needs to water the pastures of new game releases so I don’t have to sit and think of something to write about only a handful of inconsequential titles ever again.
Views: 25Borderlands DLC Gets The Retail Treatment In The UK
Not everyone’s a fan of digital downloads. Some people, like myself, feel a tad safer physically owning their purchased items because it’s located in a safe location of their choosing – preferably on a DVD shelf. The whole idea of having DLC digitally stored on your local hard drive is great as it omits the idea of having to insert a disc, which makes our lazy lives much simpler having everything at the touch of a button, literally. But a lot of us just love the smell of newly opened cases and the intoxicating scent of Blu-ray/DVD plastic discs. Gearbox Studios understands the obsession with the aforementioned details above and has decided to release their successful 2009 shooter’s – Borderlands – downloadable content into one package which will be released for retail shelves. Mmm… more plastic…
Views: 41PlayStation Store Update 2/25
Well hello readers, it is Thursday, which means it is my favorite day of the week, PlayStation Store day. The biggest sale item for the week is Warhawk and its DLC. Make sure you get extra greedy with Greed Corps this week. If you want to experience an old RPG, the Grandia is for you. We get two amazing demos this week, if you haven’t played the God Of War demo, get on it NOW! Also, there is a Darksiders demo as well, which is something that should be played as well. A metric crap ton of good DLC releases this week, with new DLC from Little Big Planet, Borderlands, Uncharted 2, and Valkryia Chronicles. This week also brings MAG dynamic themes, so you can further show your allegiance to your faction. Speaking of loyalty, there are also some Baseball team themes for MLB 10 The Show.
On the PSP front we have 2 new releases: Echoshift and GTI Club Supermini Fiesta. Also there are several new minis; however, I have to complain about the pricing on these once again. Other than that, the PSP update is a bit barren. The PS3 update alone makes this week an incredibly update. Go spend some money. Full update available after the break.
Views: 44A Little Info and Screens on Borderlands DLC
Gearbox and 2k Games released a little info on the upcoming Borderlands DLC, entitled The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. General Knoxx will be the biggest DLC bundle yet, it will include new enemies, weapons, missions and items to collect.
Furthermore, it will raise the level cap from 50, so if you’ve thought your treasure hunter was maxed out. Think again! Although, it wasn’t mentioned what the new cap will be. Also not mentioned was price and date of release, although, after looking at these screens Major Nelson posted up on his twitter, it’s hard not to want that release date to be soon.
More Borderlands DLC En Route
Although Borderlands was released in late October of last year, it already has 2 impressive DLC add-ons and a third was just mentioned. Although the name of the release wasn’t mentioned, level designer Jason Reiss on the Gearbox forums, made mention that this will be the biggest DLC yet. It will raise the level cap from 50 and star the foul-mouthed mechanic, Scooter. Thus far, no other details were hinted at.
Hey all, hope you all had a nice holiday, but today is an important day, it is the first PlayStation Store update for the year. Sadly, this update is rather underwhelming… On the PS3 front we are getting a price drop on some Ubisoft PSN titles, the only things is, none of these are particularly good… As far as new releases are concerned, we are getting Matt Hazard: Blood, Bath, and Beyond. I am split on this game, I know that it will be humorous, but will the game be an enjoyable experience as well? I guess it is nice that we are getting a demo as well, so we can try it before we buy it. Also, we are seeing the Dark Void demo this week, so definitely get that and try it. As you all may know, weeks where Qore, Pulse, and Tekzilla release on the same day are my favorite. I think you can all guess why. So see what is coming on the PSN with Pulse and check out some behind the scenes coverage on Qore. Borderlands fans, be sure to check out the new DLC titled “Underdome” if you want to elongate your experience on Pandora, or if you just want to keep at 100% on your trophies (I am 72% with the platinum). If videos are your thing, there are a plethora of new game-related videos being released this week as well.
On the PSP front, the Pinball Heroes Bundle, Bomberman Land, and Dungeon Explorer are all dropping. Pinball Heroes is a cool game, because it features tables based off of some of the most popular PlayStation titles, including Uncharted, PAIN, High Velocity Bowling, and Hot Shots Golf. Do you think you know videogames? If you do, Buzz Quiz World DLC is coming and is packed full of videogame trivia (check for my review of Buzz Quiz World TOMORROW). Also there are seven Disgaea 2 DLC packs releasing as well.
Hopefully this week is just a warm up. Check back every Thursday for the PlayStation Store update, Happy 2010!

Are Games Better With RPG Mechanics?
No, it’s not a written-in-blood fact, it is merely my opinion – I feel that games are improved when they employ mechanics typically found in RPGs. Warning: The following contains things that I personally consider “RPG mechanics”, your mileage may vary. This is my editorial and so you’ll have to live with what I consider RPG-based mechanics. Sound good? Okay, let’s start.
In recent years there has been quite a few mash-ups of RPG and [enter other game genre here]. Whether it be action game, platformer, first-person shooter, racing game – you name it, developers have tapped into mechanics that were once considered (mostly) RPG staples. In my opinion, these mechanics added to a title seem like the “in” thing to do these days, so everyone is doing it, however it does make those games better overall. Perhaps that is just the RPG fan in me speaking out. Also, perhaps that is why there is such confusion these days about what to put in the “RPG of the Year” categories in various web site awards and, especially, on shows like the VGAs.
So, let’s take a look at some of the recent games that have crossed paths with the RPG, and consider the horror that these titles would be without that element.
Borderlands (FPS):
If you were having a conversation with me face to face you probably wouldn’t want me to get started on this subject. I figure I’ll just get it out of the way here and now: No matter what anyone tells you and no matter what Gearbox says, Borderlands is not an RPG. It is a stylized Call of Duty with loot and a crappy story. Now, no where in there did I say it was a bad game – quite to the contrary. For a FPS game, it is pretty darn good. I actually own it, and I’m not a fan of FPS titles! I know, you’re surprised, right? I don’t have a problem with the game itself, I have an issue with labeling it as an RPG.
Take out the loot and experience and the game is a standard FPS title (although the nice visuals help it stand out, it would still be rather typical of the FPS genre). Every year in video game awards – and one show in particular, the VGAs – it seems like they have to sneak one game in there that is mostly an FPS title but just happens to have RPG elements, and this year it was Borderlands. Come on now, if you’re going to put Borderlands in that category, why not go all the way and put Modern Warfare 2, Assassin’s Creed 2, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time and Forza 3 in that category as well, because they all have about the same amount of RPG elements.
Ok, rant over. The point – Borderlands minus the loot and experience system is just a standard FPS title. Possibly still fun, but I wouldn’t own it.
Assassin’s Creed II (Action-Adventure):
Another game I adore. I enjoyed the first one, even though it was highly repetitive and lacked most of the RPG elements they added the second time around. Gear upgrades – check. A (simplistic) town-building system – check. An economic system (money) – check. Looting corpses – check. The previous game had none of those, that’s why I just liked the first game and why I adore the second. Would I have purchased it without these RPG elements? Probably, but only because it isn’t an FPS title.
I would have, however, liked to see Ubisoft go a step further with the RPG side of things. In fact, it would be awesome if they took a look at Fable II and said, “Hey, what if we allowed our character to purchase properties and decorate their own houses!” Yes, that would indeed have been a cool feature of ACII. The fact remains, many of the best features of this sequel are RPG elements, without them there wouldn’t be much improvement over the first installment. Don’t even get me started on the massive amounts of side quests…oh, wait…
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time (Platformer):
Weapons leveling up via experience and side quests? Those two features scream RPG, mostly because my first ever experience with those features were, naturally, in an RPG. Your typical platformer usually doesn’t have side quests. (I’m at a loss as to which genre this game actually fits into, but I’m going to call it a platformer for the sake of diversity.) During your time spent
between story segments, you’re tasked with performing various side-quests and collection tasks in the “space” areas of the game. Many of these are optional, or, if you will, side quests. Have I said that enough? This is a platformer with side-quests. That’s not a bad thing!
Mario could take a lesson from Ratchet and Clank. Imagine New Super Mario Bros. Wii with dozens of side quests you could take part in, either during or between levels. I’d love to see Nintendo tackle that one! Giving Mario customizable, upgradable lasers might not be the best idea, however. So, imagine the latest Ratchet and Clank without any of the side questing. It would be a much less robust experience. Or, basically, like Mario. (Zing! Down Nintendo fanboy, down!)
Forza Motorsport 3 (Sports/Racing):
Okay, I can understand the RPG elements in Borderlands, Assassin’s Creed II and even Ratchet and Clank. But, a racing game? C’mon, now you’re just messing with my head. In Forza 3 you actually gain experience as you race – you gain overall experience and experience per car (or manufacturer). These experience points lead to you “leveling up”. Of course, this doesn’t signify that you get more abilities, it merely opens you up to more events and some car rewards or discounts on cosmetic and performance upgrades. Still, it’s experience in a racing game!
Again, not a bad thing, just awfully odd. Next thing you know my car will be performing a limit break on the car in first place and will get disqualified for “unsportsmanlike behavior”.
These are just a few of the more recent titles that I feel benefited greatly from adding RPG elements to the game. I certainly feel the games are better for it, however I’m strongly against labeling them RPGs in any sense of the word. Borderlands is a FPS with RPG elements, Assassin’s Creed II is an action-adventure title with RPG elements, and so on. While I’m not saying a first-person style game, for example, can not also be a true RPG (look at Oblivion), I am saying that I think we need a stricter genre labeling system for these various non-standard awards we tend to hand out as an industry.
In addition to all that, I have nothing against these RPG elements in games of other genres – it definitely makes them more attractive to me. Sure, I would buy some without those elements, but then again, some I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole if they didn’t have those mechanics.
Take this article as you will, it is purely my opinion on the matter. As always, your thoughts are appreciated in the comments below.
Views: 114Borderlands Sells 2 Million Copies
You know what’s funny is that I have yet to play Borderlands. Sad, isn’t it? One of the the games that I’ve been waiting for this entire year has yet to make its way on my PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or PC. Our Contributing Editor, Chad Awekerman, got the privilege to get some hand-on time, and some, with one of the most anticipated first person shooters of 2009, that lucky bastard. And it seems that a lot of people, and I mean a lot, have also joined in the Borderlands mayhem.
Borderlands, developed by Gearbox Software, has apparently been having a pretty good run. Hell, what the fuck am I talking about? The game has sold more than 2 million units worldwide. That’s pretty impressive, I must say. The first Role Playing Shooter of our time, the game takes ingredients from both first person shooters and RPGs and intertwines them into this beautifully crafted concoction.
Are we going to see a sequel for Borderlans sometime? You bet your sweet ass we will. But before that time comes, I first need to get my hands on this first one. Damn you, Chad. Damn you for playing the game.

Right after you beat Borderlands, Gearbox puts out The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, and gets you right back into the game. If that wasn’t enough, it looks like another DLC pack will be coming in the near future. This information has been found because Gearbox updated the trophy information once again, and it includes 5 new trophies. It looks like some good arena type gameplay will be coming. If you haven’t been to the arena with buddies, I would recommend doing so, because it is AWESOME!

Views: 27PlayStation Store Update 11/24
Hey everyone, I know what you’re thinking, “What the hell? I wasn’t expecting a store update Tuesday!” Well, in order to accommodate for the Thanksgiving holiday, Sony is giving us the update early this week, so I guess we have something to be thankful for this week. On the topic of being thankful, there is a HUGE sale going down until December 2. I have to say, if you have not played Flower yet, buy it RIGHT NOW, it is an amazing game. Gravity Crash is dropping this week, and that game looks like something that I will definitely be checking out (for you guys, not for me =P). Also, Borderlands fans rejoice, because this week gives us the first DLC for the game.
On the PSP front, there is a lot of stuff for you to peruse. We have an assortment of new minis, but I’m not personally sold on these yet. I would say get Fighting Force, not for the game, but for the character names, Hawk, Smasher, and Mace. Those are some manly ass names. Hopefully you can all get some new games and catch up on your backlog while you have some time off. Now go buy Flower!

Borderlands Review
Borderlands is the newest game from the guys over at Gearbox and it is truly a game that exceeded my expectations. As far as gaming cliches go, I feel that most gamers can agree that post-apocalyptic wasteland is definitely on the list. However, Borderlands really makes the best out of what it has. As an FPS/RPG, I was expecting another Fallout 3 (I thought that game was complete trash), and I was a bit apprehensive to try Borderlands; however, as previously stated, I was impressed.
The story of Borderlands is one that almost seems the opposite of Fallout 3. Instead of leaving a vault, you are finding one, but this vault is full of advanced technology and treasure. Actually, the vault in fallout was pretty advanced too… I digress. The game takes place on a planet named Pandora. Parents tell their children a fable about a hidden vault on Pandora that holds advanced alien technology. Many children grow up and spend their entire lives searching for the vault. I like how the story builds around fables and plays at the childhood curiosities of the characters and society. There are a few continuity issues, but nothing that should really detract from the game.
As far as looks go, Borderlands is a really good looking game. The switch to cell-shading was a great choice to make, even if it was done a bit late in development. The game has a tendency to drop framerate quite drastically when a lot is going on, which is a definite drawback. Also, I noticed a fair amount of pop in, most commonly, after loading a new area, and the pop in was noticeably worse in online play.
As far as gameplay goes, I feel that Borderlands really does it right. The gunplay feels great and really does justice to the FPS part of the game. The RPG aspects are done extremely well also. The most awkward part of this game would have to be the driving. I felt that it was a tad loose and could have used a bit more refining. In Borderlands, you get the choice to play as one of four characters: Mordecai the Hunter, Roland the Soldier, Lilith the Siren, or Brick the Berserker. Each character has a special ability that can be used to give them a competitive edge. Special abilities are learned once your character reaches level 5. Another perk about hitting level 5 is the acquisition of skill points at every level after. Skill points can be distributed amongst the three skill trees, making you character different depending on the allocation of points. Personally, I play a support class soldier.
Borderlands is a loot grind, and that is an understatement. With over 17 million unique guns, players can never be sure that they have the best possible weapon. Weapons go by a color-based rank system, which is quite similar to World of Warcraft (white, green, blue, purple, yellow). Later in the game, you can pick up guns with added perks, including acid, electricity, and explosive. You also receive grenade upgrades which give different properties to your grenades, which can give you even more of a competitive edge. There are class-specific enhancements as well, which can give points into certain skills and enhance passive abilities. You can also add perks to your class specific ability and change it to suit the situation. You have to be careful with how many items you have, because bag space is extremely limited, even after you earn most of the bag upgrades.
Borderlands allows for up to four player multiplayer, which is how I played most of the game. When playing with more people, not only does the game get more difficult, but the loot gets substantially better. Playing with people you know is highly advised, as there is no trade system. Playing with friends allows for a different experience, and it was an extremely fun experience at that. However, the pop in and framerate dropping is worse in multiplayer that it is in just regular single player.
Although Borderlands does sport some performance issues, overall, I feel that the game has more redeeming qualities. Simply put, the game is just a damn good time, and if you allow a bit of lag and texture pop in ruin it, then you are looking too far into it. I have to say that Gearbox made a winner with Borderlands.
