Modern Warfare 2 Community: The Epitome of Evil

Infinity Ward’s first-person shooter Modern Warfare 2 was last year’s most anticipated video game, and it had sold 4.7 million copies worldwide within the first 24 hours, which is pretty damn impressive for a game. As of June 15th, 2010, Modern Warfare 2 has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and its growing as each day progresses. Sure, this game has been out now for  9 months, and there are certainly better online titles to be played, but this is such an addicting game that I am compelled to place my two cents onto the table.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love this game. I know that it may seem like I despise  it given the title that I chose for this editorial. But, it’s not the game itself that makes me so upset here, it’s how people chose to play it. I play Modern Warfare 2 every single day on my PlayStation 3,  and have been  playing since the game’s launch. I have spent so many sleepless nights gaining XP and brutalizing my way to the top of the leaderboards, as I hope all of you are doing the same. So, without further hesitation, let’s get down to the skinny of it all…

Why Can’t Developers Get Multi-player Gaming Right?

Online multi-player gaming has, for me, completely eclipsed the single player experience so much so that it takes a rare gem such as God of War 3 to pull me away from my buddies on the virtual battlefield. That said, nearly every multi-player game I play has some kind of bizarre aspect built into it for no apparent reason other than to make it a pain in the ass to enjoy. Now I’m not talking about game-play mechanics here or unbalanced maps. I’m talking about design choices built into the multi-player setup – let’s look at some examples.

PS3 and PC Owners… Your Resurgence Starts Today

FPS fans, wait no further as there is a new map pack heading your way today on the PS3 and PC. Modern Warfare 2 players will now be getting their chance to play the second batch of maps in the Resurgence Package, available today for $14.99 in North America on the PS3, and worldwide on PC. PS3 owners overseas, expect to see the new map on July 7th, 2010.

Popular FPS Modern Warfare 2 Makes Waves In Japan

Activision’s Call of  Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has sold considerably well in Japan. The sales of the first MW game combined with its sequels create a series total of more than 500,000 copies. Apparently, MW2 is responsible for just over 300,000 of these copies.

This can be considered a feat because first person shooters in general are not a very popular genre in Japan (how I envy them). These kinds of games rarely sell as well as MW2 has in this case. Released in December of 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is developed by Infinity Ward and published in Japan by Square-Enix. Square-Enix has also announced a price cut for the game, effective September 2nd.

Resurgence Map Pack Gets a Release Date for PC and PS3

Hi-Res Modern Warfare 2 – Resurgence Pack Screenshots

Following the not-so-surprising announcement of the Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Pack from Robert “FourZeroTwo” Bowling, we now have screenshots for the upcoming DLC. While we haven’t heard a definite on a price point just yet, I’m sure it’s safe to assume that it will sell for the ridiculous going rate of 1200 MS points (or $15 bucks). Sorry PS3 fans, but as promised this Map pack will be once again exclusive to Microsofts green machine for about a month before the rest of you can get your care-package-stealing-hands on it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Resurgence Pack Coming June 3

The newest expansion pack for Modern Warfare 2 has been announced by Activision and Infinity Ward. Set to release for the Xbox 360 on June 3, The Resurgence Pack will include 5 new maps which no details have yet been released.

More Modern Warfare 2 DLC On The Way

Get ready for that bank account to take another hit moms, dads, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 addicts. The Stimulus Package was just the beginning of downloadable content available for MW2 and the next dose is on the way soon. Despite approximately 35 employees leaving Infinity Ward and the intense focus from the entire team at Treyarch on Call of Duty Black Ops, it looks as if MW2 just refuses to leave the headlines quietly.

Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package Available for PS3 and PC

Activision and Infinity Ward have made PS3 and PC gamers very happy. After first being released for the Xbox 360, the Stimulus Package is finally here. It will be available for download in Europe and Australia tomorrow, May 5.

Modern Warfare 2 Sets New Guinness World Record

Modern Warfare 2 continues to break all time records worldwide, and today Activision and Infinity Ward have been recognized by Guinness World Records as the most successful entertainment launch of all time. With one day sales totaling more than $401.6 million worldwide, the FPS was the fastest selling entertainment product in its first 24 hours on sale, breaking the Guinness World Record previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV.

Three More Infinity Ward Employees Jump Ship

This is one bad month for Activision, I say. IGN has reported that three more employees, or former now, have left the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward. Programmer Jon Shiring and senior animator Bruce Ferriz independently confirmed that they were leaving Infinity Ward, with Ferriz moving on to Big Red Button Entertainment and Shiring not shedding any light to where he’ll be immigrating to. “I’m not trying to create spectacle, I just wanted to avoid the LinkedIn nonsense,” Shiring regarding his move, referring to two former Infinity Ward employees (Todd Adlerman and Francesco Gigliotti) who were discovered via LinkedIn to have left the studio. Lead designer Mackey McCandlish has also confirmed (via Twitter) that he too will be departing from the studio after “a great 8+ year run.”

Although it might intentionally be coincidence (or it might be), this news comes just a day after the debarred Infinity Ward co-founders – Vince Zampella and Jason West – announced the establishment of their new studio Respawn Entertainment, and their partnership with Activision rival Electronic Arts. None of the ex-Infinity Ward employees, as of this writing, have joined the new company.
