Today XSEED announced that its next PSP title in the Ys franchise, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, would be seeing a limited edition release, much like the previous title, which came out only a couple weeks ago. What will you need to do to get this cool limited edition? You’ll have to pre-order the game from “participating nationwide retailers” – read: GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon, etc. What does the limited edition include? A soundtrack CD and a 4″x6″ 2011 desktop calendar with artwork from the game on it.

Both the regular edition and the limited edition of Ys: The Oath in Felghana are scheduled for release later this year. When exactly? No date has been given yet. Apparently XSEED was very happy with the response to Ys Seven. Their president, Jun Iwasaki, had this to say about the success of Ys Seven:

“The response we’ve seen from fans here of the Ys series, starting with the release of Ys SEVEN and now the anticipation for Ys: The Oath in Felghana, has been extremely exciting and rewarding for us. For this reason, we are extending our gratitude by offering this special collector’s package, which reflects fan input on first wanting another Limited Edition in the series and then the kind of content they like to see included. This is the definitive version of Ys: The Oath in Felghana as its offering is a must-have for any fan of the Ys series and action RPGs.”

Even though Game of the Year contender God of War III was released several months ago, Ballistic Publishing has just announced The Art of God of War III. While it may be a bit late to the party, everyone who’s anyone knows that you can’t rush perfection.

The book will be released in October and is allegedly a “visual history tour” of the game. It will feature more than one hundred works of art that did not appear in the video game, including concept art, character studios, character modeling and a lot more. There will be three versions of the book available:

A standard paperback edition which will sell for $65, leather bound edition for $129.99 and a “Limited Folio Edition” for a princely $300. That folio edition contains a presentation case, a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and a cover ornament designed to resemble the Blade of Exile. Seems like they’ve targeted the “casual”, “passionate” and “insanely obsessed” fans with this book so be sure to snag yours this October.

There is plenty of type surrounding the upcoming action/adventure title Tron: Evolution. It’s related to a movie, also called Tron, from 1982 and is being published by Disney Interactive, who are purveyed by Disney, who created the film. Did I mention there will also be Tron film released this year?

Whether or not you’ve followed the franchise since 1982, you will most definitely be interested in the upcoming game when you see its classy Collector’s Edition. It includes a model of the light cycle, which is the iconic vehicle that only moved in directly parallel or horizontal lines.

Alongside this stylish model (which has glowing light, by the way), you’ll also get a display case for the model and premium casing for the game. At a luxurious $129.99, you’d expect a few more trinkets, but fans of Tron have no reason to pass this up. Unless of course, they can’t afford it. Tron: Evolution will release November 1st for the PC, PSP, PS3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360.

Good news for Halo aficionados: BradyGames has announced that they will be creating the Halo: Reach Signature Series strategy guide. They have been working exclusively with Bungie to craft it and it will be available on the day and date that Halo: Reach hits store shelves.

The guide, like the game, will be released in multiple versions. The first is the 352-page Signature edition and the second is the 448-page Limited edition. They come with a host of goodies as well. Electronic Arts has pleased its shooting audiences with details on the 2 special edition versions of the much touted Crysis 2. The FPS is available for pre-order in two versions: The Special Edition and The Nano Edition. While both versions will receive premium packaging and special multiplayer unlocks, the Nano Edition is for the Crysis fanatic in all of us. Hit the break for more details on these exquisite sets.

The Special Edition will be priced identically to the standard edition while supplies last (similar to EA’s recent Battlefield Bad Company 2) and will include:

• Bonus XP – Players will jump into multiplayer battles with an edge by starting with enough experience points to gain early access to all 5 preset class load-outs.
• SCAR Hologram Decoy – This special attachment to the SCAR will project a hologram image of the player, allowing them to confuse their opponents with the decoy.
• SCAR Weapon Skin – This digital camouflage skin will allow players to add a personalized touch to one of the more popular assault rifles in the game.
• Platinum Dog Tag – This special one-of-a-kind dog tag is one of over 250 that will be collectible in Crysis 2 multiplayer, helping to separate you from the rest of the field.

The Nano Edition however will retail for an indulgent $150 and comes chock full of Crysis goodies. Including everything in the Special Edition, it will also include:

• An 11” / 28 cm statue of the game’s hero “Prophet” on top of a New York taxi cab
• A High Quality Art book
• All packaged inside a backpack modeled after the Nanosuit itself

This rarity will not be available in stores and is pre-order only. It is also extremely limited. Few games are as anticipated as Crysis 2 right now. Look for more on these handsome special sets closer to the game’s release in March 2011.

New details have surfaced on a Fable III themed limited edition controller. Sporting a very stylish gold design, this lovely piece of hardware looks even better than the Halo: Reach controller. Apparently, the design was intended to resemble the Crown of Albion, which can be seen in Fable III’s box art.

As if the fact that it’s absolutely gorgeous wasn’t enough of a reason to snag the pad, it also comes with an exclusive in-game tattoo.  The controller is planned to hit store shelves on October 5th, leaving a good deal of time until the release of Fable III on October 26th. Lots of times as Americans, we get different variations of the games that we purchase. We can choose to purchase the standard version, which is the meat and potatoes of it all: a game disc and a manual. But very often we may get to choose from special or limited versions of games. These special editions more often than not include additional content and merchandise and provide a distinct sense of vanity to the wide-eyed fan. Now sometimes things come in the form of pre-order bonuses or what have you but the point is that as a passionate fan you are able to obtain more products that relates to a game you like (or love).

That is why whenever the internet is abuzz with news and details of a hot new region specific Collector’s Edition, you become very disappointed. It is simply heart breaking to see some of the glorious trinkets and goodies that gamers of that region will be indulging in. Trading cards, art collections, DVDs, soundtracks, we pay big bucks for some of the things that come in special editions around the world. But why? What about you? What about the devote gamer who has been following this title since conception and would love nothing more than a themed controller skin?

Thus was my train of thought recently when I learned about the Fan’s Edition of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. This Europe only edition of the game comes in a fabulous package including a host of goodies that any BlazBlue fan would kill for. However, the only option of American fans was the lackluster standard edition. Not subtracting from the merits of the game itself, which is exceptional by the way, as a huge BlazBlue fan I had to feel at least a little disappointed.

Not that this was the first time I felt this disappointment. Near Christmas of last year, just before its American release, word circulated on the internet about a Collector’s Edition of Bayonetta. It included a replica of the gun she uses, a full size hand crafted gun replica for God’s sake. I was prepared for any kind of American LE release since I had saved up for it. Unfortunately, it too was limited to a specific region.

Since that time I have delved into forums and sites discussing why Bayonetta wouldn’t see an LE in the States. The results were mixed, from things like “SEGA doesn’t think it will do as good in the US” all the way to “Australia is just better than America, THAT’S why!” and all other assorted responses. The fact remains, it alienates the fans.

If a game is going to be released around the world, the same treatment should go for each continent it’s released on. My most recent example, BlazBlue, is really quite confounding since the States received the special treatment last year with a set that included a DVD and two CDs. A year later the sequel releases and the only option is the standard version.  It makes you feel as though AKSYS doesn’t care about us anymore.

I understand that often time’s games are published in different regions by different publishers. For example, Atlus published Persona 3 here in the States, and gamers received a soundtrack as the pre-order bonus. So, since the publishing is being handled by Koei in Europe, those fans may not get the soundtrack. That being said, if they don’t get the soundtrack as a bonus, they will definitely get the option to purchase it at some time, which compounds the problem.

Now does any of this make me feel any better that I will never get a Scarborough Fair replica? Not really, but it does clear things up a bit. It sounds like they want to save money, which as companies, isn’t surprising. Even though in some cases it would be nearly impossible to bring region exclusive limited editions to everywhere the game is released, it sure does make one feel left out.

European BlazBlue players will get their hands on the newly released sequel sometime in October. This is actually very good news to them since the prequel, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, came out relatively recently in April of this year. A bit shocking considering that Calamity Trigger came out in June of last year in North America.

In any event, the wait will definitely be worth it when Europe gets a very special version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. There will be a standard and limited version of the title, in addition to this new version. The limited edition includes highly stylized cards that detail the attacks and systems of specific characters, and a very pretty ninety-six page art book. The cream of the three versions though is the Fan’s Edition. It includes the full limited edition, an art print, a Noel statuette (which you will recognize from the Japanese limited edition) and possibly most importantly, a DLC code for the character Makoto Nanaya, who we introduced sometime ago. This fan’s edition is ultra limited to a single run of 500 copies and is only available at Zen United.

However, if you visit the site at the link below, you will see that it is already sold out. It isn’t very surprising; with only 500 copies they practically never existed. It is a little disappointing that only European fans had this option, after the wonderful Limited Edition of the first game that Americans were able to grab last year. Alas, the standard version is fantastic as well. The game releases in Europe this October.

Recent video footage shows the unboxing of what is believed to be the StarCraft 2 limited edition. Why is this newsworthy? The set isn’t supposed to be available until the game’s launch day July 27th.  In the video, which was taken from a Chinese website and supposedly in the Czech language, we are shown the game disc, a bonus disc, a comic book, an art book and the packaging. Apparently the guy in the video is friends with the son of a person that works in manufacturing. So this begs the question; is the leak real or is it fake? That is for you to decide, but I will say this: If it’s truly a fake, they put a LOT of time and effort into it. Purists shouldn’t feel encroached upon either. The game cannot be run until launch day anyways. StarCraft 2 launches to the honest, self-respecting public on July 27th.

Fable III is making its way onto the Xbox 360 this year, and with that comes the glory of all things that is a “limited edition.”

Soon after the jump, you’ll bear witness to a couple of items that will be coming with Lionhead Studios’ Fable III boxset. For those of you who are into the whole “limited edition” thing, Fable III comes with a pretty nice set of goods. For one, the box cover is unique and comes on the inside of a book – you know, the ones people use in movies to stash valuable items. The appealing thing about this specific book-box concoction is that it comes with two compartments. One will hold the game, and the other – which slides from the middle – holds a grungy set of playing cards with a shiny token, which is the “Guild Seal” from the game. Hit the jump for more.

To add some more “umph” to the package, this pack comes with exclusive in-game content; and they give you a card to prove it! Of course, if you’re not too big on spending wads of cash for some extra assorted goodies,the game does come in a non-limited-edition format (i.e. standard $59.99 game). The box art isn’t as dynamic, but, hey, it’s still Fable III.

For the limited edition, you’ll be coughing up about $79.99, which isn’t as pricey as some would think. A list of the extras below:

If you’re a Fable fan, this limited edition will fill your tummy with butterflies. Consider this an early announcement for those of you who need to save up.

So, yesterday the huge, pink box with half-naked anime ladies on it arrived. It was the Really Naughty Limited Edition of the strategy RPG Record of Agarest War and it the box contains some of the most…um…interesting collectors items I’ve seen in such a package. While the game itself is reported to be like crack for SRPG fans, the marketing and packaging of the game are questionable, given its rating of T for Teen here in the U.S. So, to show you all the mysterious contents of this box, I decided to put together a little video for your perusal as I dig into this bountiful feast of anime gaming goodness. It has a few hiccups here and there, but give me a break, it’s my first one! (Also, no matter what anyone says, there is always a reason to use the picture above. Always.) As you can kind of see in the image above (it’s small, I know), the controller is white with an outlined image of the game’s lead character, Lightning, on the right hand grip, similar to the PS3 of the same design. You want? It’ll run you about $90US once it’s available to import. It also comes with the Asian edition of Final Fantasy XIII (Hong Kong/Taiwan version).

Haven’t heard of Deathsmiles? I’m not surprised. It’s a very nich Japanese horizontal side-scrolling shooter. It was on display at PAX East and, if you were there, you might have gotten your hands on it. The line was pretty long to get a shot at playing it, but I watched some others play for a few minutes. Not necessarily my type of game, but you know what? Aksys sure as hell knows how to make some awesome limited edition bundles. Remember the one for Record of Agarest War? Yeah, this one is better – it comes with a sexy Xbox 360 faceplate, along with a copy of the game and a soundtrack CD with tracks hand-picked by the game’s director. What more could you ask for, right? A mouse pad where you rest your wrist on a girl’s ample bosom? That’s so three months ago. Awesome faceplate > boobs any day, right?

Producer Anders Gyllenberg gives an overview on the PC-specific features that gamers can look forward to on release of Battlefield Bad Company 2. Some of the features games can expect will be PC-specific graphical enhancement options, server selection tools, and an integrated friend system which allows you to find & squad up with your friends on the fly. Sounds like the guys over Bad Company 2 have the gamer in mind when they came up with the new features. When you play a team oriented game, communication is a must. All you have to do in order to become eligible for this collector’s edition of the game is simply play the Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Beta this weekend, and you’ll automatically be entered. Microsoft has clarified that the 250GB Xbox 360 hard drive will not be sold on its own.

This hard drive is not being sold separately,” said Larry Hryb (pronounced Herb), boss of Xbox Live, during a short video on Kotaku.

Those of you who aren’t aware of the newly announced bundle will be glad to know a bit about what’s in the box. Erhem.
