Originality In Gaming: An Observation Of The Industry Today
Right now if you were to ask me which game I thought would win game of the year 2010 my response would probably be a sequel of some kind. Things have become quite banal in games as of late. Personally, it seems like we just see one big shooter after another, with various tidbits of unique titles here and there. It’s the middle of July, meaning there are less days left in 2010 than there are days that have gone by. What fresh noteworthy game has come this year? As difficult as it might be, try to limit your response to non-sequel games also. You may find that the pickings are quite slim. For perspective, let’s reflect on what made 2009 a great year in gaming and explore whether or not there is still hope for the rest of this year.
Views: 1521Why Can’t Developers Get Multi-player Gaming Right?
Online multi-player gaming has, for me, completely eclipsed the single player experience so much so that it takes a rare gem such as God of War 3 to pull me away from my buddies on the virtual battlefield. That said, nearly every multi-player game I play has some kind of bizarre aspect built into it for no apparent reason other than to make it a pain in the ass to enjoy. Now I’m not talking about game-play mechanics here or unbalanced maps. I’m talking about design choices built into the multi-player setup – let’s look at some examples.

I’m 32 years old, I work 9-5, I have a fiancé & 2 kids, I contribute to this website and in my “spare time” I’m a gamer. Now I use the phrase “spare time” tentatively because in reality I do not have any spare time, in fact I have to MAKE time in order to partake of the hobby I love, but I accept this as part of getting older and taking on more responsibilities in the hope that one day I can watch proudly as my own children vegetate in front of the 3D TV while kicking some ISA ass on Killzone 6: Visari’s Revenge. The problem is that games these days require commitment, serious commitment, and so not only do I have to make time to play games I also have to schedule which ones I am going to play in order to be able to get to a comfortable competitive level.

I am an advocate of multiplayer gaming; it provides longevity to your favourite games and promotes healthy (sometimes unhealthy and crazed) competition between players across the globe. I rarely enjoy playing single player games, because they usually have little replay value and you don’t always feel you have progressively achieved something by the end of the game.
Some single player games do have replay value, but most have too much ‘this is so tedious I just might die’ replay value. I am all for getting trophies in a game, but when I have to complete the entire game again on light, dark, inverted, holographic, angel, devil, car, boat, tree, monkey, duck, cheese, and bread mode just for the final trophy, it gets a little tiring.
However, back to the actual topic – MULTIPLAYER!

First DLC Headed to MAG and It’s Free
Do not adjust your monitor, and no it isn’t a typo. The words Free and DLC are, in fact, in the title of this post… together. As if I couldn’t already say enough good things about Sony’s little FPS bundle of joy, they turn around and do this. The upcoming update will bring into play the often requested, Flashbang grenade. The perfect solution for when you want to disorient your opponent to the point that he/she looks as lost as Stevie Wonder on stage at an awards ceremony. And there’s more, just read on to find out.

I know what you’re thinking. You just read the title above and thought to yourself “who in the name of Jim Sterling wrote this drivel?” and to that, all I have to say is… relax. Not only is what you’re about to read pro Zipper Interactive, it is also very much pro Sony. Just read on.
Well hello readers, it is Thursday, which means it is my favorite day of the week, PlayStation Store day. The biggest sale item for the week is Warhawk and its DLC. Make sure you get extra greedy with Greed Corps this week. If you want to experience an old RPG, the Grandia is for you. We get two amazing demos this week, if you haven’t played the God Of War demo, get on it NOW! Also, there is a Darksiders demo as well, which is something that should be played as well. A metric crap ton of good DLC releases this week, with new DLC from Little Big Planet, Borderlands, Uncharted 2, and Valkryia Chronicles. This week also brings MAG dynamic themes, so you can further show your allegiance to your faction. Speaking of loyalty, there are also some Baseball team themes for MLB 10 The Show.
On the PSP front we have 2 new releases: Echoshift and GTI Club Supermini Fiesta. Also there are several new minis; however, I have to complain about the pricing on these once again. Other than that, the PSP update is a bit barren. The PS3 update alone makes this week an incredibly update. Go spend some money. Full update available after the break.

Hey everyone, I am posting this on time this week. First thing first, sales. Capcom has MvC2 on sale this week and will have a different item on sale for the next 3 weeks. Also, Ubisoft has a large sale on some of their offerings. There are no new releases this week, and also the I think Sony should rename their PS1 classics to just releases. I don’t recall playing any of the games available this week. This week we have a demo for Yakuza 3 as well as a demo for the PSP iteration of Eye of Judgment for Qore subscribers, just check the February issue. For DLC we have ACII Bonfire of the Vanities and a costume for Dante’s Inferno. The biggest DLC is the Lost In Nightmares add on for Resident Evil 5. This will clear up the details of Jill and Chris’s venture to Spencer’s Estate, you’ll remeber that flashback if you played RE5. MAG Avatars are available, so now you can show all your buddies what faction you have pledged your allegiance to. For videos, you can watch the latest episode of Pulse featuring the always beautiful Christina Lee. Also, this week marks episode 1 of The Tester, which is a reality show where contestants compete to become a PlayStation Tester. Expect my impressions on that tomorrow.
MAG Review
Massive Action Game (and yes it is as big as it sounds) is 256 gamers thrown into the mix to battle it out for the 3 different Private Military Corporations in the Shadow War. Since the concept was first brought up, gamers and press wondered if it could really be done. Zipper Interactive and Sony right from the start, said yes it can. There is no single player mode when playing MAG, it is go all out (online) or go home. It’s multiplayer only and strategy plays the most important part in this game. If you’re trying to make it on your own in MAG and you will be met with ultimate failure. You must choose a side and you must communicate with the rest of your team. Not only do your stats reflect on you, but also on the faction that you choose.

Views: 36New Release Rundown Week of 1/24
Hello all, I am here today with the New Release Rundown, after kind of sleeping all day Monday. This week is packed full of releases, and should be exciting regardless of what console you own. PS3 owner’s get to join the Shadow War this week in MAG. Pick your faction and prepared to back them through victory and loss. There will be a patch that should be fixing a few last minute issues as well. If you own a 360 or PC, call work, and let them know you caught the swine flu and will be out for a week or two, because Mass Effect 2 is hitting TODAY. Bioware’s latest epic should be something that shouldn’t disappoint, but it will take over your life. This week is also a hell of a week for Wii owners. Travis Touchdown returns this week in No More Heroes 2, so be ready to waggle your way through the sequel to one of the most risque Wii titles. Also, Tatsunoku vs. Capcom releases today for the fighting game fanatics that were left saddened by the release of Street Fighter 4 last year. Also, check out our unboxing of the Fighting Stick that MadCatz sent our way (impressions also).
My favorite game title for the week has to go to Marines: Modern Urban Combat. It was like they finished the game and were thinking of the name, and one guy said how about Marines: Modern Warfare, and then they realized that Modern Warfare was already the title of a game. As a last ditch effort they went with the fact that it is modern but could only come up with Urban Combat. This almost makes it sound like it should be Def Jam: Modern Urban Combat. It sounds like 50 Cent should be fighting Lil Wayne. Also, why do you need two different personal fitness games? I’m sure both the male and female iterations could have been on one SD card… For shame… Alright guys, enjoy your week and buy some games.
