Modern Warfare 2 Becomes the Best Selling Game in British History

modern warfare 2

Saying that Modern Warfare 2 was a big game has just become an understatement. According to Chart-track , the game has become the bestselling video game title in the history of UK game releases.

While sales numbers are not approximate, the game achieved this marveling feat in only about ten months. What’s more, the game has only spent three of the past forty-one weeks outside of the top ten sales charts.

Talk about big. The previous record holder was Dr. Kawashima, a brain training game for the Nintendo DS. You can bet that we’ll hear something on specific numbers from Activision sometime soon; they just love to gloat. Also, the previous record holder before Dr.Kawashima was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Is There a Lack of Communication and Teamwork in Online Console Gaming?

Gears of War Teamwork Scribble by zenithomishu-278x300One of my biggest pet peeves while playing online games is the lack of communication and teamwork that happens between players. I don’t know if this is only something that happens to me or what, but it just feels like the communication between teammates is non-existent. Now, I can only speak from my own experiences while playing PlayStation 3 online, since that is the system that I mostly play online with. But, whether in a party with friends, or even just in a match by myself, I tend to see that no one is communicating on what is going on within the game. Come on, people. It’s not that difficult to tell your teammates, “Hey, you have a guy coming up to your right. Stab that fool!” Maybe it is that hard for some? Or maybe people just don’t care. But, how about we go ahead and take a trip down that road anyway, shall we?

Five Things That Are Uttered During a Modern Warfare 2 Session Without Fail

Modern-Warfare-2

For almost 9 months I have been actively playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and not because I think it is an amazing game, but because the social interaction it offers is just so darn fun. Many of my hardcore and casual gaming friends play Modern Warfare 2, and playing with friends on a game, no matter how crappy, offers some good times. So now that you know my brief history and why I still play Modern Warfare 2, I would like to share with you some of the stuff that happens every single night without fail. I have condensed this to a list of five things that is said/yelled/screamed every single Modern Warfare 2 session that have lasted over an hour. Please note, this is my experience on Xbox LIVE. I’m not sure how things are on the PSN side of things, but rumors are swirling that Modern Warfare 2 players on PSN don’t even talk. =P

Modern Warfare 2 Community: The Epitome of Evil

modern warfare 2Infinity Ward’s first-person shooter Modern Warfare 2 was last year’s most anticipated video game, and it had sold 4.7 million copies worldwide within the first 24 hours, which is pretty damn impressive for a game. As of June 15th, 2010, Modern Warfare 2 has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and its growing as each day progresses. Sure, this game has been out now for  9 months, and there are certainly better online titles to be played, but this is such an addicting game that I am compelled to place my two cents onto the table.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love this game. I know that it may seem like I despise  it given the title that I chose for this editorial. But, it’s not the game itself that makes me so upset here, it’s how people chose to play it. I play Modern Warfare 2 every single day on my PlayStation 3,  and have been  playing since the game’s launch. I have spent so many sleepless nights gaining XP and brutalizing my way to the top of the leaderboards, as I hope all of you are doing the same. So, without further hesitation, let’s get down to the skinny of it all…

Why Can’t Developers Get Multi-player Gaming Right?

MW2 Lobbies Merge Without Friend

Online multi-player gaming has, for me, completely eclipsed the single player experience so much so that it takes a rare gem such as God of War 3 to pull me away from my buddies on the virtual battlefield. That said, nearly every multi-player game I play has some kind of bizarre aspect built into it for no apparent reason other than to make it a pain in the ass to enjoy. Now I’m not talking about game-play mechanics here or unbalanced maps. I’m talking about design choices built into the multi-player setup – let’s look at some examples.

Will Call of Duty MMO Trigger Cross-Platform Activision Network?

Modern-Warfare-2 MMO

[Feel free to chime in with your own opinions in the comments section once you've read through mine and give us your raw reaction to this revolutionary way of thinking for the Call of Duty franchise. Keep in mind, this is not just about being able to play with each other across other systems, although that is the main idea, but also the huge evolution that Call of Duty could experience as a result and how it could re-ignite the passion that a few of us gamers have lost with playing the series.]

With the realization of one monumental cross-platform feature after another in the video games industry it only makes sense that the big dog should share in the innovation that is taking place on services like Steam, which now allows Mac gamers to pair up with Windows PC gamers for a good time, and of course Sony Online Entertainment’s upcoming DC Universe Online allowing PC/PS3 gamers to unite. Who can forget past miracles like Final Fantasy XI allowing PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360 gamers to play together.

Recently Activision echoed the sentiments that a good portion of Xbox Live users primarily play Call of Duty games as their main title on the online service, or as their only title in some cases. Beyond this there have also been talks for some time now about making Call of Duty a subscription-based game in future iterations, this would likely include an expansive re-think of the franchise which could very well add a lot to the game experience being offered.

Taking all of this into account, one thing that has always annoyed me as a gamer is the fact that I have to go out and buy another system if I want to play video games with a friend who only owns one or the other. In the case of Call of Duty we have PC gamers, PS3 gamers, and Xbox 360 gamers and if you want to play with these crowds you must own each machine respectively.

Not only is this a hindrance for gamers and their convenience/ability to play with friends online enjoying the game series, it is also a huge missed opportunity for Activision, and I believe they have realized this as well. The company states that over 75% of their profit is made without the help of gaming consoles, this is a scary statistic to anyone who prefers gaming on these consoles but we need to stop and think about how much better this game could be on the console before becoming worried that it’s all about PC/consumer devices for future COD games.

Popular FPS Modern Warfare 2 Makes Waves In Japan

Modern Warfare 2 cover

Activision’s Call of  Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has sold considerably well in Japan. The sales of the first MW game combined with its sequels create a series total of more than 500,000 copies. Apparently, MW2 is responsible for just over 300,000 of these copies.

This can be considered a feat because first person shooters in general are not a very popular genre in Japan (how I envy them). These kinds of games rarely sell as well as MW2 has in this case. Released in December of 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is developed by Infinity Ward and published in Japan by Square-Enix. Square-Enix has also announced a price cut for the game, effective September 2nd.
