Cladun: This is an RPG Pushed Back Two Weeks

cladun logo

Cladun, the retro-style, dungeon-crawling RPG in your pocket from NIS America, has been hit with a two week delay. The cause for this delay? Two letters. Two itty-bitty letters. During the character creation screen, you are unable to use the “Y” and “h” characters to name your little guy (or gal?). To allow the final version of the game to go up on the PSN for public consumption without those errors, a new build of the game is being produced and submitted to Sony for approval. This process apparently takes exactly two weeks.

We’ll have a review coming for you for this title before the release date, so stay tuned. Just for the record, ours is the buggy copy, but I’m sure this won’t affect our review at all. Well, unless Jon is extremely partial to “Y” and “h”. If that’s the case, heaven help us all.

Portable White Knight Chronicles Officially Announced

whiteknightchronicles2 15-1024x576

In this week’s Famitsu, something that Sony has been hinting around finally was announced – White Knight Chronicles: Episode.Portable – Dogma Wars. This is a version of the title for the PlayStation Portable that is aiming for a release in Japan sometime in 2011. I’m tired of making jokes about how long the first White Knight Chronicles took to localize, so I’ll just tell everyone to not hold your breath for this to come stateside.

This new portable iteration features the White Knight once again, except this time around it’s the enemy. So, something must have taken place in the 10,000 years since Leonard’s adventures in the first two PS3 outings. Not a whole lot is known about this title yet, but it seems to continue the tradition of RPGs that start on a console making their way to a handheld platform, much like Valkyria Chronicles and Kingdom Hearts. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on this one.

Ys Seven Review

ysseven box

I went into Ys Seven with few expectations, and even less knowledge of the entire franchise than I wanted. Needless to say, it was an RPG and I’m all for trying new RPGs. This one was no different. The Ys franchise has been around for a long time and, unlike other RPG franchises, this one sticks mostly with the same characters, just different stories in each title. Here we have the series’ main character, Adol, and his friend Dogi (is that pronounced like “doggie”?) arriving on a new land via boat. What is your goal? To search for treasures, of course.

Not being a series regular, so to speak, I didn’t quite know what was going on, as the dialog didn’t seem too cognizant that some players may not have played previous games. While the story is unique to this title, I just didn’t “get” all the character interactions between Adol and Dogi because I hadn’t played previous titles in the series. But, all that really isn’t needed to enjoy this game.

New Record of Agarest War 2 Screens Are Awfully Naughty

agarestwar2 11

If you’re a fan of the borderline hentai screens from the first Record of Agarest War, you probably should get a clean pair of pants before taking a look at the below screens. These were released from developer Idea Factory, likely to tantalize fans and get them to buy the second game. To be completely honest, the first game is a highly underrated strategy RPG, that fans of that genre should most definitely check out. I expect the second one to be even better…especially with these screens to back it up. Enter at your own risk.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn – Say What?

goldensun darkdawn 01

We knew a new Golden Sun game was coming, but we didn’t exactly know it was coming this soon. Nintendo dropped a bomb on us today – along with the announcement that they would be dropping the price of two DSi models, they let us know that Golden Sun: Dark Dawn will be releasing for the DS on November 29, 2010.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn takes place 30 years after the first two Golden Sun games, introducing us to some new faces and a newly changed world. Naturally, the quest that players will undergo here takes them from humble beginnings on a journey to save the world. I haven’t heard that one before, have you?

Needless to say, a good portion of the game will focus on what is being called Djinn, or spirits that give their owner powerful abilities. There are over 70 different Djinn within the game to collect and use to your advantage throughout various story segments. They can be used to help you anywhere from battle to completing puzzles to destroying obstacles.

So, RPG fans have one more reason to celebrate this fall, especially fans of the original Golden Sun titles, which has definitely built a cult following over the years.

New Dragon Age: Origins DLC Coming Soon

dragonageorigins witchhunt

Today Bioware announced that some new DLC for Dragon Age: Origins is coming down the pipeline. This story is called “Witch Hunt”, and will focus on your playing chasing down and attempting to find Morrigan. To me it seems that this actually happens post-game, so it may be somewhat of a conclusion to the Dragon Age: Origins story. Needless to say, it seems like another character-heavy chunk of DLC, which is a great thing considering how much “Leliana’s Song” fleshed out more details about that character. You’ll be able to import your Dragon Age: Origins or Awakening characters, as well as earn rewards that transfer between all the games and expansions.

“Witch Hunt” will be available on September 7, 2010, which happens to be the same day as the “Lair of the Shadow Broker” DLC will be released for Mass Effect 2. I guess they figure they might as well release them all in one fell swoop. It’ll be available for $6.99, or 560 Microsoft/Bioware points. You can check out more info on the new content at Bioware’s official site for the DLC.

Dungeon Defenders Announced w/ 3DTV + Move Support

Dungeon-Defenders-Screen-21

Dungeon Defenders is what happens when tower defense and role playing game mechanics fall in love, get married, and pump out their first beautiful newborn. To put it mildly, this is one sexy looking game that could only have come from two hot parents such as TD and RPG. I’m personally not huge on tower defense, but it always had that potential in my mind and I’ve seen quite a number of decent TD concepts, this one absolutely takes the cake so far.

Perhaps the most obvious feature that should be pointed out which gamers are going to love is the drop-in, drop-out online and local multi-player hybrid model the game boasts. Play online with split-screen at the same time and join/leave at any moment to keep the action fresh, fun, and full. There will be castles to defend, towers to build (of course), and players take direct control of characters with the classic magic and weapons you’d expect as well as some less than common gear. And as always a game of the RPG nature just wouldn’t be an RPG without leveling up and treasure!

The basic concept is to defend your base as packs of enemies attack (think Gauntlet on steroids) and even bosses of epic proportions including an Ancient Dragon clamoring to join in on the madness. The art style is looking beautiful so far and one of the great things about Dungeon Defenders is the fact that everything you do is being tracked dynamically to provide real-time stats that go beyond your achievements to give you that in-depth report of just exactly what kind of damage you’ve been administering. If you are wondering why I’m so excited about this title heading to PC, consoles, and mobiles, you will want to hit the break for a further breakdown of this title’s features across various formats (including PC and PlayStation 3) accompanied by screens and a trailer featuring game-play!

Arc Rise Fantasia Review

arcrisefantasia logo

Traditional RPGs on Nintendo’s waggle-wand system are about as few and far between as they come, so once every so often when one comes around it is typically a big deal. I was rather excited to blow the dust off my Wii and dive in to Arc Rise Fantasia, which was a joint project between Imageepoch and Marvelous Entertainment. It was initially going to be localized by XSEED, but they passed off the job to Ignition Entertainment. I really, with all my heart, wish that XSEED held on to it and did the localization themselves, because Ignition…well…read on to learn my thoughts on that.
