New Star Ocean: The Last Hope International Trailer

The latest in the Star Ocean franchise has been out nearly a year on the Xbox 360, but now it’s the PS3’s turn to get this sleek-looking, action RPG from tri-Ace and Square-Enix.  Just today a new trailer for the game was released, showcasing many of the game’s memorable characters – both the main cast who you can pick up in-game to join your party and minor characters who help (or harm?) your band of galactic travelers on their journey.  I can’t embed the video, but you can head on over to Eurogamer Germany to see the whole thing.  I quite enjoyed this entry in the series, so it is nice that it is finally returning to a Sony console.

Note that the trailer is in Japanese, but Star Ocean: The Last Hope International does release in North America on February 9, 2010.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International Details Emerge

If you’ll recall, the Xbox 360 exclusive Star Ocean: The Last Hope isn’t going to be exclusive for much longer.  The PS3 version, with the suffix “International”, is due to be released in Japan in February.  With it comes many changes to the original games, some even brought about by fans of the title.  In the latest Famitsu magazine the game’s producer, Yoshinori Yamagishi, was interviewed. Here’s a few things he brought about about the PS3 release.

  • The PS3 version will be on one disc (instead of three, like the 360 version).  This is obviously because of the larger capacity of BluRay media.
  • Battles in the game have been rebalanced and a much-requested targeting mechanic has been put into place.
  • The visuals will be less color saturated and will have a softer, warmer feel.

I don’t know how I feel about that last point, as I thought the over-saturation in many of the game’s alien landscapes accentuated the fact that it was, indeed, an foreign planet.  It had a surreal quality to it, I fear that the game will lose that if they remove the over-saturation of colors.  But, I guess we’ll see, eh?  We’ll likely learn more about this version of the latest Star Ocean title at this week’s Tokyo Game Show.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope Coming to PS3

One of the JRPG franchises that used to be a Sony exclusive – Star Ocean- jumped ship to the Xbox 360 earlier in the year.  It was never advertised as being exclusive for that console, so there have, of course, been rumors that it was coming to the PS3 sometime in the future, much like other 360 RPGs.  Those rumors seem to have been proved true.  The game appears to be getting a PS3 release in Japan early next year, dubbed Star Ocean: The Last Hope International.
