Gearbox Publishing and Compulsion Games' We Happy Few was denied by the Australian Classification Review Board in May, which meant the game could not release in that region. Fortunately, after fighting this decision for quite a bit, the developers got this decision overturned, with We Happy Few receiving an R18+ rating and permission to release in the country.

According to the developers, they had to go through a "great deal of effort" in order to submit an appeal and get the decision overturned. We Happy Few was originally denied due to the focus on drug use within the game; however, in a new press release put out by the Australian Classification Review Board, the decided to give the game a rating because "the interactive drug use is high in impact."

No content had to be modified so We Happy Few could be released in Australia, so players in that region won't have to experience a neutered or censored version of the game. That being said, the game's rating still does come with a consumer warning for ‘Fantasy violence and interactive drug use."

We Happy Few is currently available on PC and Xbox One via Early Access and Xbox Game Preview respectively, and will officially launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 10.
